On Politics: Secrecy Fight Between Trump and Congress Escalates

Good Tuesday morning. Here are some of the stories making news in Washington and politics today.

The fight over President Trump’s stonewalling of Congress escalated on two fronts on Monday. A judge ruled that his accounting firm must turn over his financial records to Congress, while separately, Mr. Trump moved to block Congress from receiving testimony by the former White House counsel Donald F. McGahn II. The fights raise the issue of what power the president has to keep secrets from Congress.

Access to a government jet 24 hours a day. An office in the West Wing. And an assurance of being made secretary of homeland security by November. Those were among a list of 10 conditions that Kris Kobach has given to the White House if he is to become the administration’s “immigration czar.” See the rest of the list here.

Mr. Trump’s continued demands for investigations into his political opponents have intensified debate over whether his often-transparent calls for action by the Justice Department amount to an abuse of power. Most recently, the president has called for an investigation into business deals in China by Hunter Biden, the son of Joe Biden — the candidate Mr. Trump’s advisers believe could pose the biggest threat to him in 2020.
